Today I saw a very good blogpost on the Ask the Directory Services Team blog. Check it out there:

Purging Old NT Security Protocols

This blogpost is about how to discover which computers and applications are using NTLM V1 and LM security, regardless of your operating system. Everyone knows that Kerberos is Microsoft’s preeminent security protocol and that NTLM is both inefficient and, in some iterations, not strong enough to avoid concerted attack. NTLM V2 using complex passwords stands up well to common hash cracking tools like Cain and Abel, Ophcrack, or John the Ripper. On the other hand, NTLM V1 is defeated far faster and LM is effectively no protection at all.

Sometimes I hear some confusion what the possibilities are in SharePoint Online for Office 365 in relation to Customization and Development. That’s the main subject in this article, to clarify what is possible in SharePoint Online if customization and development of SharePoint is one of the requirements while going to Office 365.

In SharePoint Online, developers can upload custom code to their SharePoint Online environment with the new Sandboxed Solution feature inherited from SharePoint 2010. And also the use of Silverlight and the client object model. Improvements in SharePoint Designer also provide the ability to customize SharePoint Online applications.
Note:
While SharePoint Online offers many opportunities to building customized solutions, the service does not support Full Trust Coded (FTC) solutions or what is referred to as farm-level solutions.

The following customization strategies are available to SharePoint Online developers:
• Configuration by using the browser.

Customizations that you can perform by using the SharePoint Online user interface in your browser. For example, you can edit page layouts, add and customize the default Web Parts, add lightweight Microsoft Silverlight widgets to a page, or embed jQuery code in a Content Editor Web Part.
• Customization by using SharePoint Designer.

Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2010 is a web and application design program you can use to design, build, and customize your websites within SharePoint Online. With SharePoint Designer 2010, you can create data-rich webpages, build powerful no-code workflow-enabled solutions, and design the appearance and behavior (look and feel) of your site. Customizations that you can perform in SharePoint Designer are generally declarative, and can also employ client-side scripting.
• Developing SharePoint Online solutions that contain custom code.

To enable more technically complex solutions, SharePoint Online provides both server and client object models for developers. Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 provides a range of specialized templates for creating sandboxed solutions that contain a variety of SharePoint items, such as site and list definitions, workflows, Web Parts, event receivers, and content types, to include in your SharePoint solutions.

I’m now working at a customer where I’m upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010. I’m doing the Detach and Attach method. But I figured out a way without any downtime.

In this case we have a seperate SQL Server 2008 R2 and SharePoint 2010 SP1 server. Our old enviroment consists of an SharePoint 2007 server with Service Pack 2 installed and also a seperate SQL 2005 SP3 server. This method can work in any enviroment size where SQL and SharePoint is seperated.

Below you see the high level steps:

• Check if there are any unknown features on the SharePoint 2007 side with the following command:

Stsadm -o preupgradecheck

To be able to run this command the SharePoint 2007 farm needs to have Service Pack 2

Remove any faulty features with the Featureadmin tool (be very careful with this powerful tool). Also fix other errors reported by stsadm -o preupgradecheck before upgrading

Install SharePoint 2010 on the new server and run the psconfig.Don’t configure anything yet when asked! Only instal configuration database.

Backup the content database on the SharePoint 2007 side. Don’t choose the Restore Database in the SQL Management Studio, but choose Restore Files and Filegroups.

Restore the content database on the SharePoint 2010 database enviroment.

Mount the content database with the following on the SharePoint 2010 side:

Mount-SPContentDatabase –databasename <<databasename>> -databaseserver <<databaseserver>>

Let the command run and check in the new environment how the sites look and see if there are any errors after executing the Mount-SPContentDatabase command. Fix them. Testing and compare is very important in this step. This command automatically created an log-file for review.

Change DNS alias to new SharePoint 2010 servers

Upgrade finished. Decommission old SharePoint 2007 server!

In case you have a question please leave a comment on this post and I will reply as soon as possible.

I recently changed to job, and I’m now proud to work for Avanade(Microsoft Partner of the Year 2011). This week I was asked to install SharePoint and CRM 2011(Totally new for me). I was able to do that, and I didn’t knew it’s possible to integrate Microsoft Dynamics CRM with SharePoint. Microsoft has created something for it called the Microsoft Dynamics CRM List Component for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. This integration enabled document management capabilities in Microsoft Dynamics CRM. There are two aspects to SharePoint Server integration:

Setting up SharePoint integration. A system administrator sets up a SharePoint Server environment. The Microsoft Dynamics CRM administrator (a user who has the SharePoint Site Collection Administrator role) selects the Microsoft Dynamics CRM entities for which to enable the document management feature, and specifies the target SharePoint Server. As part of specifying the target server, the Microsoft Dynamics CRM administrator specifies the SharePoint Server site collection or the SharePoint Server site URL by using the SharePointSite entity.

Creating and managing SharePoint document location records. Microsoft Dynamics CRM users can create and manage SharePoint Server document location records after SharePoint Server integration is enabled. You can create and manage SharePoint Server document location records by using the SharePointDocumentLocation entity. Microsoft Dynamics CRM also allows for the automatic creation of folders on the server that is running SharePoint Server for entity records under certain conditions. However, automatic creation of folders cannot be done through the Microsoft Dynamics CRM SDK.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM List Component for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 is a SharePoint Server solution package file (.wsp) that must be installed (uploaded and activated) on the SharePoint Server site collection on the target SharePoint Server 2010 server to enable the following:

View documents that are stored on the SharePoint Server 2010 server in a Microsoft Dynamics CRM List view.

Automatic creation of the document locations on the SharePoint Server 2010 server.

You can download and install Microsoft Dynamics CRM List Component for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 from the Microsoft Download Center. To install this component, you must have SharePoint Server site collection administrator privileges on the target SharePoint Server 2010 server.

SharePoint Server integration is supported for SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Server 2010 Online, SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint Server 2007 Online.

For automatic creation of location records on SharePoint Server, you must use SharePoint Server 2010 and the Microsoft Dynamics CRM List Component for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010

This enables an organization to store and manage documents in the context of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM record on a server that is running SharePoint, and leverage the SharePoint infrastructure to share, manage, and collaborate efficiently. Because the documents are stored on a server that is running SharePoint, non-Microsoft Dynamics CRM users can directly access the documents on the server, provided they have the appropriate privileges on the server that is running SharePoint Server to do so.
